Kuro Izakaya

This izakaya at Suntec City has a big focus on Japanese whisky, sake and bar bites (think robatayaki and kushiyaki).

This Japanese gastrobar in Suntec City is plating up delicious robatayaki, kushiyaki and small plates to go along with their Japanese sake and whisky. The space, a beautiful corner unit facing the big round-about surrounding the Suntec's famed waterfall, takes after typical izakayas found in Japan, all decked out in hues of black and gold and chic, contemporary decor.

There’s a big focus on top-grade pork here, with dishes like grilled Kurobuta pork collar ($14), pork belly ($4) and pork jowl ($16). They use the highly-rated Kosei Charcoal Grill which uses both charcoal and infrared waves to grill the food without drying it for a nice juicy and earthy flavor. They’re also very proud of their tamago (egg) selection: the onsen tamago with ikura, shirataki noodles and yuzu zest ($12) looks particularly intriguing. If you're in a rush, they have 10 different lunch sets ranging from their classic chashu ramen to dry ramen, as well as the all-time fave chirashi don and buta yaki don and other bento sets you can order beforehand to pick up for later.

On the drinks front, there’s the Kirin Krush ($8), a beer tower of half-liquid-half-frozen beer (which we were disturbed to see described as looking "cute and fluffy for the ladies and wonderful for men who like their beer extra cold"), whiskies from Hibiki, Nikka, Yamazaki and other Japanese producers, as well as several Scotches. Plus the ground-floor, semi-alfresco space gives plenty of people-watching opportunity.
