SINGAPORE RESTAURANT

Angeleno

Californian-Italian restaurant Angeleno is Gemmill Lane's hot new opening.

Foodies know that the robust flavor of Italian-American cooking are a distinct cuisine unto itself, and few places in town do it well and give it the fine dining treatment. For these reasons, this year's sleeper hit Angeleno's is a must-visit. Brought to you by the people behind Luke's, Angeleno serves hearty but balanced fare like the Iberico pork chop with wild fennel pollen, their famous saucy meatballs with woodfire polenta and a half-dozen housemade pasta dishes—not to mention Italian-American icons like the veal chop parmigiana .

Occupying the former premises of Luke's Oyster Bar & Chop House, this no-frills, casual dining restaurant features a restrained (but still hearty) menu of Italian-American plates with a Californian slant.

The food may be more robust and Italian than Californian (which favors a more breezy, lean and green ingredients), but the restaurant already has a much raved-about reputation here. Order highlights like Angeleno's meatballs ($22), served with wood-fired polenza and tomato sauce or the signature veal chop Parmigiana ($75), breaded, deep-fried and served with red sauce and melted mozzarella.
