Their currency of choice: passion

Early last year, rumors of a terribly exclusive members’ club that would replace heritage hotel New Majestic began circling the grapevine. It would be a revolutionary club, catered to a more creative community, in line with reflecting the cultural history of the space on Bukit Pasoh Road. Soon after in May 2017, New Majestic Hotel threw a two-day art, fashion and lifestyle festival as their closing hurrah, before shuttering its shophouse doors for good.

Fast-forward to today, and said private members’ club is officially ready to open. Set to open mid-March, Straits Clan promises to function as a home not just for creatives, but to local culture, uniquely Singaporean identities, and thought-provoking content.

The interior of Straits Clan

A hospitality project by The Lo & Behold Group and Members Only Hospitality, the club takes its name from the history of Bukit Pasoh Road—once known as the “Street of Clans”. Recruiting suitable clan members is the natural next step, then. Hoping to create a gathering place for creativity and social change, Straits Clan prioritizes diverse, driven thought-leaders and game-changers in various fields.

Wee Teng Wen, co-founder and Managing Partner of The Lo & Behold Group, said the Straits Clan member would possess an entrepeneurial, creative or social change mindset; and that passion, rather than mere financial standing, would be the key attribute the club would look out for. “We want to build a platform for our city’s most passionate progressives to come together and create meaningful, positive change,” he added.

The club will encompass three F&B spaces, as well as entertainment, work and wellness facilities that include a boardroom-slash-mahjong space, Tropicana-themed club, and a gorgeously decorated lounge. In addition, Straits Clan will play host to unique experiences, events, festivals and conferences that span the realms of art to design to technology.

The Reading Room

Members of the public will be pleased to know that the club isn't by-invite only. Anyone can apply, but there is a screening process by the membership committee that's still in the works. While details are slowly being released, applications to join the clan are already open.

Aun Koh, co-founder and Chairman of Members Only, said, “The clan has a long-term ambition of shaping society. The goal of Straits Clan’s programming is to inspire, amuse, entertain, educate and move our audiences.”

We’re already looking forward to seeing how Straits Clan will fare next to other newbie members’ clubs (such as 1880 at the Quayside); though it seems a safe bet to say it’ll live up to its hype.

Straits Clan is located at 31-37 Bukit Pasoh Road, and will open in mid-March. More information here
