SINGAPORE RESTAURANT

Birds of a Feather

This fusion restaurant has a foresty vibe and serves Western cuisine with a Sichuan twist.

Amidst the loud and buzzing cocktail bars and restaurants, lies another international outpost that gives the bustling Amoy Street a piece of Chengdu. Birds of a Feather is a fusion restaurant and bar with a rather calm ambiance, serving Western cuisine with a Sichuan twist.

This 90-seater establishment consists of two shophouse units merged together and is naturally lit by two huge air-well openings. Its interiors are inspired by Chengdu—the capital of the Sichuan provice that's known for its greenery and fertile land—which explains the liberal use of plants. Wood is also one of the main elements here, with partitions, the ceiling, tables and counter tops all hand-made using native northern Chinese timber to create a forest-like atmosphere that showcases its East-meets-West philosophy. Overhead cloud-shaped lamps, a wall art-piece of bulbs and jointed branches with faux cockatoos completes the overall look.

Food wise, they serve dishes like their signature burger ($30) made up of charcoal grilled beef patty, foie gras, cheddar, caramelized onions with a chilli soy tapenade for both lunch and dinner, the healthier roasted chicken and avocado salad with Sichuan pepper ($18/$20) and the hot and sour Chazuke that's served with Niigata rice and a spicy pickled mustard green broth, charcoal-grilled barramundi and mentaiko. But if you're after something lighter, they also have small plates of crispy pork trotters in a bag ($12), crispy gyoza with truffle soy vinaigrette ($16) and a decent selection of cakes and desserts. As for their drinks situation, they have a pretty extensive list of specialty coffees and teas, fresh juices, smoothies, beer, Old and New World wines, spirits and some classic and house cocktails.
