SINGAPORE BAR

The Stomping Ground

Over 35 wines available by the glass here

Buzz: A newbie wine bar that calls One Fullerton home and our most beloved Singaporean icon, the Merlion, its newfound neighbor.

Décor: Nothing overly elaborate or fussy; the comfortable indoor space features grey marble tables and white bar stools (we really like the handwritten menu on the chalkboards which stretch the whole expanse of the walls), while the alfresco area is colonized by (more) white furniture.

Drinks: The main selling point is undeniably the impressive list of over 30 wines available by the glass (from $8): about the same number of whites and Champagnes (Dom and Louis Roederer), with a stronger leaning towards the reds; mostly Old World stuff with several labels from the US and New Zealand. Highlights include the sweet 2006 Sauternes Château Rayne Vigneau ($30) and refreshing Pierre Paillaird Brut Grand Cru ($18).

Food: Aside from pub grub staples like truffle fries ($10), fish & chips ($15) and fisherman’s stew ($15), try the pan-seared foie gras on toast ($15) and 17-hour Kurobuta pork belly skewers coated in crushed pistachios ($15).

Music: Easy listening, enough said.

Crowd: Weekdays typically see PMEBs swirling and swigging, thanks to the close proximity to Raffles Place. On the weekends, it’s populated with equal parts tourists and locals who happen to be in the area.

Why we’ll be back: You don’t have to be an oenophile to appreciate the convenience of sampling a variety of wines without having to finish a bottle (unless you want to, in which case you have our full support).
