SINGAPORE BAR

sQue Rotisserie & Alehouse

Buzz: The latest addition to the ever-expanding list of Emmanuel Stroobant Group establishments, along the Singapore River. In case you were wondering, sQue is pronounced skew.

Décor: It’s a casual bistro and bar that seats a whopping 256 folks, with the bulk of it being alfresco, as well as an air-conditioned indoor area targeted at heat-averse Singaporeans (the exposed brick wall is a particularly nice touch); both spaces are populated with pale wooden tables and chairs, so don’t go expecting anything fancy.

Food & Drinks: A smart choice is the sQue platter ($28) of chicken wings, potato skins, chili crab cakes and fried onion petals, which are ideal for sharing. You’ll also find substantial eats such as oxtail stew ($25) and rotisserie items like pork belly ($26) and beef ribs ($38) to pair with any of the 10 draught beers on offer, including Kostrizer Schwarzbier and London Pride (both from $11 for a half pint). But for the drinkers, the highlight is the list of over 200 international beers such as Moa Methode ($23), Trappistes Rochefort 8 ($20.50), Black Abbot ($17), 5a.m. Saint ($14.50), Hitachino Nest Extra High ($20) and Double Bastard Ale ($38.50). For the ladies, there’s also a few lambics to choose from like Pink Killer ($11.50) and Lindemans Cassis ($12.50).

Music: Classic rock.

Crowd: On our visit, we spotted PMEBs kicking back after work, as well as a few lost, sunburnt tourists who’d stopped by for a cold one after wandering along the river.

Why you’ll be back: The beer-drinking population will be happy campers, although you’ll need a good wad of cash if you’re looking to get well and truly sloshed, and the grub’s good to boot. They’ve also got a 1-for-1 happy hour deal on all draught beers from 11.30am-6.30pm (Mon-Fri), for those of you lucky buggers who can nip out during office hours.

When the weather is good, eating outside can be a truly enjoyable dining experience. These joints with charming open air areas are just the place to dine on breezy evenings.
