SINGAPORE BAR

Outpost 903 Gastrobar

The buzz: This casual stylish spot in the well-heeled Bukit Timah neighborhood opened only three months ago in a historic corner shophouse, but it has already become a comfortable hangout for those staying nearby.

The decor: This place is raw yet chic, courtesy of Singapore design firm The Bureau. Much of the dark wood and black metal furniture are repurposed pieces. The benches were fashioned from the existing wood flooring, while the previous tenant’s table tops were given a fresh look with some industrial metal legs.

The food: It’s an experimental mish-mash. Western classics like the hearty 903 burger ($16) sit alongside some pretty sophisticated Mod Sin offerings. There’s a dish of Fettuccine Rendang ($16) and their Outpost Wings ($12) are marinated in Nonya sambal.

The drinks: Their innovative cocktails are colorful and feature Pokka-brand drinks as flavorings (one of the bar partners, Alvin Toh, used to work with the package drink giant). The amd whiskey ($10) uses soursop juice as a mixer while the white magic ($10) features chrysanthemum tea with rum and mint. Other options are six beers on tap including three craft brews ($9 upwards for a pint), bottled beers (from $6 upwards), spirits (from $10 per glass, $130 per bottle)—think Grey Goose and Maker’s Mark—and easy drinking red and white wines (from $40 a bottle).

The music: Early in the day, it’s a roster of country western tunes. Later, expect renditions of pop hits by independent artists.

The crowd: Area residents. Expat families chow down on brunch on Sunday mornings and working professionals swig post-work tipples on weekdays.

Why you’ll be back: It’s the type of laid-back haunt with good food and drinks every neighborhood should have. Plus, the space is surprisingly slick.

Closed on Tuesdays.
