Magic? Alcohol? We’re there

It’s pretty unlikely to find both magic and alcohol in one place, especially in Singapore; unless you’re an alcoholic magician, but what are the chances of that? Much like snake-charming—which on its own merit is a dying trade—magic tricks are usually only seen at corporate events and D&D’s. But there’s a Peranakan Tiki cocktail bar on Boat Quay that wants to change all this.

Recently opened just three months ago, Bee Bee’s has been quietly hosting Ming Da, Singapore very own street magician, as he performs close-up illusions every few Fridays, sponsored by a locally-owned Apple repair shop in Siglap Centre called Siglap Bobby (we’ll get to that later). These smaller performances act as a prelude to a full-fledged magic show they’re organizing called Cocktails & Magic on Nov 28, where Ming Da will perform a variety of entertaining illusions and nifty tricks up close while guests sip on relatively strong Tiki cocktails packed with a host of Southeast Asian spices.

Besides making his rounds at corporate events, this guy has also performed in cities like Amsterdam, Bristol and Las Vegas. And the reason why a seemingly random event sponsor like Siglap Bobby would back this is because the owner, Bobby Chan, is a friend of Ming Da’s, and just wanted to be a supporting friend—which later led to this idea to combine cocktails and magic at a fun place… a.k.a. the bar Chan frequents. It’s such an odd pairing that we think it’ll ironically work, especially since it’s a stark contrast from the usual fancy, big-production ones that’s more tacky than genuine.

You can’t get more local than this, guys. Tickets are $50 a pop (incl. two drinks), available here.
