  • Recent Art from Indonesia: Contemporary Art Turn

This exhibition currently on at SBin Art Plus gallery will dispel all notion that Indonesian art only includes wayang kulit, batik, gamelan and other traditional forms. Recent Art from Indonesia: Contemporary Art Turn is a vivid showcase of contemporary works by 40 of Indonesia’s foremost artists like FX Harsono, Christine Ay Tjoe and Ugo Untoro among others.

The exhibition reflects the increased intensity of contemporary Indonesian art via an expressive showcase of fresh, artistic perspectives by the archipelago’s renowned and emerging artists. The exhibition is also a visual statement on how Indonesian art has been influenced by the global art scene, but at the same time same time retaining its distinctive “localness.”

“The fact that we have been able to attract the strong support and participation of very well known Indonesian artists such as FX Harsono and Agapetus many who are established in their own right as solo exhibitors reinforces the importance of this exhibition as a platform for contemporary Indonesian art,” says curator Amudjo Jono Irianto.

Expect to see sculpture, painting and installations done with acrylic and oil on canvas, ceramic, wood and bronze. Highlights include triptychs by Agus Sumiantara, Agapetus’ sculpture of a mantis as well as Erwin Windu Pranata’s ice cream stall, which is complete with the ice cream man and fridge.
